Jonathan Buttle

Research Data Specialist II, Demographic Research Unit, California Department of Finance

Jonathan Buttle is a Research Data Specialist II with the Demographic Research Unit in the California Department of Finance. His responsibilities include designing and programming custom data visualizations for the Demographic Research Unit website; retrieval, analysis, and distribution of U.S. Census Bureau products and data sets; assisting clients both inside of and outside of the Department of Finance with questions about American Community Survey and Current Population Survey data sets and producing custom data tabulations. His research interests include data science with an emphasis on visualization.

Jonathan has a M.A. in Economics from the California State University, Sacramento. He was a Jesse Marvin Unruh Assembly Fellow and prior to working at the Department of Finance served as a budget analyst for the California Department of Consumer Affairs and the Contractor’s State License Board.

Janna Z. Goldberg

Director of Research, LendingClub

Janna Z. Goldberg is the Director of Research at LendingClub. Prior to LendingClub, Janna worked for The RAND Corporation Survey Research Group for over six years on a variety of studies related to social policy and health. She also worked at Age Wave as a Vice President. She specializes in mixed-methods research related to changes over the life course, family formation, housing demography, and the transition to adulthood.

Janna holds a Ph.D. in urban planning and development, with a specialization in demography, from the Sol Price School of Public Policy at the University of Southern California, a master’s degree in international relations from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, a certificate in global health with a focus on aging from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and a bachelor’s degree in political science and art history from the University of California, San Diego.

Beth Jarosz

Senior Research Associate, U.S. Programs, Population Reference Bureau

Beth Jarosz is a senior research associate in PRB’s United States Programs where she manages projects based in California. Prior to joining PRB, Ms. Jarosz was Senior Demographer at the San Diego Association of Governments and taught sociology at Pensacola State College. She has been both a panelist and steering committee member for National Academies workshops on the American Community Survey, is on the board of the Association of Public Data Users, and is Vice President of the Southern Demographic Association. Her publications include research on inequality, trends in fertility and mortality, and population estimation and forecasting. She has been quoted by numerous national and local news organizations. She completed her master’s degree in Demographic and Social Analysis at the University of California, Irvine.

Sohab Mehmood

Housing Policy Specialist, Land Use and Planning Unit, California Department of Housing and Community Development

Sohab Mehmood works within the Land Use and Planning Unit at HCD’s Housing Policy Division. She specializes in housing elements and is the team lead on the Technical Assistance Program that serves SB2 Planning Grants, LEAP, REAP, and Prohousing.

Armando Mendoza

Data Dissemination Specialist, Customer Liaison & Marketing Services Office, U.S. Census Bureau

Mr. Mendoza has worked in a number of capacities for the Census Bureau over the past decade, including leadership roles on the 2010 Census and 2020 Census early preparations. Other roles include 2020 Statistics in Schools Program (SIS) outreach and engagement with pre-K-12 educational organizations, education efforts to facilitate broad use of Census Bureau data products by providing training, workshops, presentations and Webinars to businesses, educational organizations, community and faith-based organizations on using data tools and apps to access census data from the Decennial Census, Economic Census, and the American Community Survey.

Prior of joining the Census Bureau, Armando served in a range of executive positions in the reprographics industry. He provided leadership in several firms in California, Nevada, Arizona, Washington, and Mexico.

He was born in Chihuahua, Mexico. He holds an M.B.A. from The Argyros School of Business and Economics at Chapman University, and an Executive Certificate in Global Management from Thunderbird University.

Dowell Myers, Ph.D.

Professor and Director, Population Dynamics Research Group, University of Southern California

Dowell Myers is a professor of policy, planning, and demography in the Sol Price School of Public Policy at USC. He directs the Population Dynamics Research Group and is a leading expert on California’s changing demographics that lead the nation’s. Dr. Myers has specialized in the demographics of housing demand and needs, with recent studies of “Peak Millennials” and future homeownership. He is also expert in trends of both immigration and children, the two groups who will form our future workforce that will replace retiring baby boomers. Dr. Myers holds his PhD from MIT, a Master of City Planning from UC-Berkeley, and a BA in anthropology from Columbia University. Gary Painter, Ph.D.

Professor and Director of Social Policy, USC Sol Price Center for Social Innovation, University of Southern California

Gary Painter is a Professor in the Sol Price School of Public Policy at the University of Southern California. He also serves as the Director of the Sol Price Center for Social Innovation and the Homelessness Policy Research Institute. He recently published a co-authored book entitled, “Payment by Results and Social Impact Bonds: Outcome-based Payment Systems in the UK and US.” He has published numerous articles in top journals such as the Review of Economics and Statistics, Journal of Urban Economics, Urban Studies, Journal of Human Resources, Journal of Policy Analysis and Management, Real Estate Economics, Journal of Real Estate Finance and Economics, and Regional Science and Urban Economics.

Professor Painter is a leading figure in the field of social innovation. In addition to his recent book, he works extensively with a variety of social innovation organizations and collective impact networks to address some of the grand challenges that society faces. His current research focuses on how to activate the social innovation process. Professor Painter also has extensive expertise in housing, urban economics, and education policy, which shapes his research on how the social innovation process can identify new models of social change within these complex policy areas.

He has served as a consultant for the National Association of Realtors, Pacific Economics Group, Andrew Davidson Co., Fannie Mae, Grant Thorton LLP, Burr Consulting, and the Research Institute for Housing America.

JungHo Park, Ph.D.

Postdoctoral Researcher, Population Dynamics Research Group, University of Southern California

JungHo Park is a postdoctoral researcher at the USC Population Dynamics Research Group. His research is based in the field of housing demography, focusing on housing shortages, rental affordability, housing needs assessment, and spatial distribution of subsidized housing. Before joining USC, Dr. Park was a researcher of the national forecasting and projections team at the Korea Research Institute for Human Settlements (KRIHS). He has been an engineer at the Samsung Construction Group and the Hyundai Development Company in South Korea. Dr. Park holds his PhD from the University of Southern California.

Walter Schwarm

Chief, Demographic Research Unit, California Department of Finance

Walter Schwarm joined the Demographic Research Unit of the California Department of Finance in 2006 as an Analyst in the city projections assignment. He moved to the State Data Center assignment as a Research Program Specialist in January 2009. From 2003-2006 he was the Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at the Regional Research Institute at West Virginia University, involved in a variety of public and privately funded research projects while maintaining the West Virginia population projections. He earned his Ph.D. in Economics from Colorado State University in 2002. Mr. Schwarm research involved modeling small region fiscal interactions and revenue sharing issues, and he has published a number of papers in academic journals as well as several book chapters.

Linda M. Wheaton, AICP

Senior Housing Policy Advisor, Southern California Association of Governments

Linda is a Senior Housing Policy Advisor at SCAG, following many years of policy work at the California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD). California’s dynamic demographic issues have been central to her work with myriad stakeholders in state and local housing policy, planning and programs, and financial assistance related to transportation, public health, and climate change. She is a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP), an M.C.P from the University of California, Berkeley, and several housing and land use organizations.
