U.S. Department of Transportation Pete Buttigieg and SCAG Executive Director Kome Ajise tour Southern California ports

SCAG Executive Director Kome Ajise joined Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and local, state and federal representatives on Tuesday, Jan. 11, for a tour of the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.

The tour showcased the ways that goods movement contributes to the national economy and supports a diversity of jobs in transportation and logistics, manufacturing, wholesale and retail trade and construction—generating more than one-third of all jobs in Southern California. The SCAG region acts as the primary gateway for international trade in the U.S. and is the largest manufacturing center in the nation, with the highest concentration of warehousing and distribution.

During a roundtable discussion, Executive Director Ajise highlighted several of SCAG’s programs aimed at mitigating the associated impacts of the incredible growth of goods movement including the Last Mile Freight Program, Curb Space Management and Integrated Passenger & Freight Rail Studies, and SoCal Goods Movement Communities Opportunities Assessment.
