SCAG Go Human Awards $360,000 to 11 Community Driven Projects

SCAG’s Go Human program is thrilled to announce that 11 community organizations have been conditionally awarded funding for local projects that leverage community gathering and resource sites to implement equity-centered, traffic safety and community engagement strategies.   

SCAG seeks to facilitate opportunities for equity-centered strategies to meet local and regional safety goals. The Go Human Community Hubs Grant Program aims to support street-level community resiliency and increase the safety of people most harmed by traffic injuries and fatalities. 

This summer, the awardees from across SCAG’s six-county region will implement a wide variety of safety projects: community audits that share and build local knowledge, playful street activations that prioritize safety for people walking and biking, community events that build momentum and support for essential safety installations, media projects that center road maps for joy and more!  

Meet the Awardees! 

Bike Ventura County (BikeVC), Youth Summer of Safety at the Oxnard Hub, Ventura County  

Bike Ventura County, through the Oxnard Bike Hub, will provide low to no-cost bike repair, offering accessible bike maintenance for people who bike as their primary mode of transportation. Bike safety education will be provided to bicyclists on their rights and responsibilities with safe commuting, and bike advocacy will prioritize pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure designs and what safe infrastructure might look like.  

Highlander Boxing Club, HBC Community Hub, San Bernardino County  

Highlander Boxing Club will use a multifaceted approach to integrate traffic safety engagement into summer youth programming. Activities will include weekly narrative therapy sessions, traffic safety clinics, pedestrian safety trainings, community advocacy events and traffic safety rodeos.The narrative therapy sessions will act as the foundation for these activities by teaching young people skills to self-regulate trauma related stressors and improve their ability to learn traffic safety.  

Youth Leadership Institute, Eastern Coachella Valley Transportation Equity Allied Leadership (ECV TEAL), Riverside County  

Youth Leadership Institute will empower Eastern Coachella Valley youth to identify critical transportation infrastructure needs and advocate for enhanced transportation infrastructure. Youth Leadership Institute will conduct walk audits, host a storytelling workshop, and develop and distribute a transportation focused zine.  

Nyeland Promise, Viajes Seguros en Nyeland Acres – Comadres al Rescate, Ventura County  

Nyeland Promise will conduct targeted outreach to the residents of Nyeland Acres at the Nyeland Acres Community Center to raise awareness about bike and pedestrian safety, develop community intelligence, introduce children to bicycle safety skills by hosting a bike rodeo, and remind drivers to slow down. Nyeland Promise will also collaborate with Oxnard Bike Hub to conduct a summer bike rodeo.  

Reach Out, Jurupa Valley Community Hub, Riverside County  

Reach Out will promote safe driver behavior and bicycle and pedestrian safety through community marketing campaigns, a youth-focused “Skate Through the Summer” event, and bike safety and maintenance training. Reach Out will work through the Healthy Jurupa Valley coalition to leverage existing partnerships and networks to facilitate community-driven activities.  

The Bicycle Tree, TWIGY Bikey Summer, Orange County  

The Bicycle Tree will build a supportive community for people who identify as transgender, women, intersex, gender nonconforming (TWIG) through their TWIGY Bikey Summer program. Activities include cooperative bike repair sessions, bike rides, and bicycling workshops. The Bicycle Tree will partner with Santa Ana Active Streets to host Learn to Ride Bike classes to engage first time riders interested in bicycling that would benefit from community support to overcome anxiety, fears, and trauma around riding a bike.  

Latino Health Access, Ride, Walk & Roll Orange County! 2023, Orange County  

Latino Health Access will continue the “Ride, Walk & Roll Orange County” project in 2023 by promoting active transportation safety, awareness, and education across working-class communities in Orange County. The project will include a youth-led digital safety campaign, a neighborhood community mural, an active transportation family field trip, and youth pedestrian and bicycle safety hangouts to create their ideal streets. 

Yolanda Davis-Overstreet Consulting, Re-Imagine Biking While Black: A Road Map to Advocacy & Joy Guide, Los Angeles County 

Yolanda Davis-Overstreet Consulting will develop and distribute the “Re-Imagine Biking While Black Guide” to encourage residents living in Los Angeles High Injury Networks to create safer communities to walk, bike and live. It will expand upon the previously released, award-winning short film, “Biking While Black: How Safe Are Black Lives on Bikes?” by providing recommendations to address the inequities and harm experienced by Black and Brown Lives.  

People for Mobility Justice, South LA Quick Build Community Planning, Los Angeles County  

People for Mobility Justice will prepare South Los Angeles residents for upcoming Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT) quick build projects through street charettes, bike audits and video content production for online engagement. Coordination with LADOT on bike audit surveys will help inform the project’s design based on community feedback. Throughout the project, People for Mobility Justice will engage community members and distribute free bicycle helmets.  

Koreatown Youth and Community Center, Koreatown Walk Audits, Los Angeles County  

Koreatown Youth and Community Center will conduct a series of walk and transit audits to identify the current conditions experienced by Koreatown residents who depend on walking, biking, and/or transit to get to and from local essential service centers (e.g., supermarket, park, medical clinic, etc.). The audits will focus on the safety conditions for vulnerable road users, including youth, seniors and women.  

BikeLA, Safety Through Education and Distribution Program, Los Angeles County  

BikeLA will conduct the Bike Safety Through Education and Distribution Program, a series of safety material distribution events prioritizing those riding along high injury network corridors. BikeLA and Walk Bike Glendale will partner to host a summer series of rides, workshops and surveys to raise awareness in Glendale around bike advocacy and navigational safety.
